Clemson at MD 2005 EA SIM Well here we are about ready for the big cyber match up with the Tigers from Clemson. Luckily I didn't see any Cyber tighty whities in Lot 1. I set the weather as Chief Meteorologist Bob W. predicts for this weekend, and we have great weather inside Byrd for this one. Herbstreit declares Whitehurst will have a day against MD's D, and Corso agrees donning the tiger head. Only big change to the depth chart was having Derick Fenner out while he recovers from the concussion he suffered in the Navy game. MD kicks off and Clemson returns the ball out to the 35. After a 12 yard gain. MD forces a 3rd and nine and they hand it off for an 18 yard gain. On first down Whitehurst hits TE 18 for a TD. This could be a long day! Jad Dean's XP good with 3:43 remaining in the first quarter. Lattimore returns the kickoff out of the end zone and out to the 19. On first down Merrills gets popped behind the line. On second down, Fridge calls a direct snap to Merrills and he gets the first. On first a nice play action pass from Hollenbach to Merrills nets 6 yards. Second down Merrills picks up one, bringing up third and three. Hollenbach hits VD for the first out to their own 47. Another play action results in a four yard gain to VD. On second and 6 he hooks up with VD again down to the Clemson 40. First down is an incomplete pass along the side line. Hollenbach calls his own number and picks up 2 yards on the draw. On third down Hollenbach and the intended receiver weren't on the same page. We go for it on 4th. . . and convert with a 10 yard pass to Weatherly. On first Hollenbach took a shot at the end zone and he pass was broken up. Well Fridge must have like something he saw on that play because the next was a TD pass in the end zone to Drew Weatherly. Ennis' XP is good to tie the game with 50 seconds left in the first. The kickoff is returned to the 19. On first down Whitehurst throws into triple coverage and the pass is broken up by Kershaw. On second a handoff is eaten up in the backfield by Kershaw again. On third down a screen pass almost was converted, but Jeremy Navarre made a shoe string tackle from behind to stop them 3 yards shy of the first, and possibly stopping an extremely long gain. Clemson punts the ball away and goes out at their own 48. The Maryland D has set the O up with excellent field position. On first down Merrills picked up 4 on a draw. Another nice play action leads to a first and 10 at the 17 . On first down Hollenbach hooked up with Weatherly, on you guessed it, another play action. Ennis XP is good with 4:42 remaining in the half. MD kicks the kick off out of bounds. Clemson takes over at the 35. On second down Holloway makes a big tackle in the backfield forcing 3rd and 17. On third Whitehurst's pass is incomplete. Clemson punts away and Jo Jo Walker returns it for 6 yards to the 35. On first down Hollenbach hits Ricardo Dickerson out of the backfield for no gain. Second and 10 Merrills picks up 6 up the middle. 3rd and 4 from the 41, Hollenbach gives it Merrills who take it off tackle for big gain down to the Clemson 37. First down Dickerson picks up 6. On second down Weatherly dropped a pass going down the sideline. 3rd and 4, Hollenbach roles left and keeps it for no gain. Terps going for it on 4th again! Hollenbach crushed by three Tigers and Clemson takes over on the 39 with 2:20 left. On first down D'qwell makes a tackle 6 yards deep on a pitch. On second down, Josh Wilson breaks up an under thrown pass attempt. On third down Jermaine Lemmons doesn't buy the play action pass play and sacks (insert circa 80's scoreboard with Testudo "sacking" the QB) Whitehurst to bring up 4th and 22 on the 27. Jo Jo takes the fair catch at the 31 with 1:49 left. Hollenbach tried to hit Dickerson and he dropped it on first down. On second Dan Melendez made a nice catch and run for a 14 yard gain. Hollenbach made a dangerous throw in the flat that could have been picked off and taken for six. On second down Dickerson picked up 5 on a reception. Hollenbach was sacked on third and Clemson called a time out with 1:03 left. Podlesh's punt went into the end zone for a touch back. I thought Clemson was running out the clock but Whitehurst completes a pass down field to the 49 and they quickly call time out. On first they pick up 7 and get out of bounds. 2nd and 3 on the 42 with 13 ticks left, Whitehurst goes toward the end zone, but his pass was ob. On third down he does it again only his time he hits WR #88 for a TD with 1 tick left. Jad Deans XP is good to tie the game. Well MD will get a chance to return the ball before half. Lattimore makes a big return and gets it out to the Clemson 35 before he is pushed out as time expires in the half with the score tied at 14. Clemson kicks off to start the second half, and Jo Jo returns it to the 33. On first down Hollenbach tried to force it into double coverage. On second down Hollenbach's pass was batted down at the line. On third down he was flushed out of the pocket and hits VD along the sideline, but he stepped out a yard shy of the sticks. 4th and 1 and Podlesh steps on the field punting from the 42. Again his "bomb" goes into the end zone for a touch back. On first down Whitehurst picks up 5 with a dump off to the HB. On second down an incomplete pass was the result. Play covered by McPherson. On third down Whitehurst goes deep, but over threw the WR. Clemson is forced to punt again. Jo Jo takes it at the 29 and gets it out to the 41. Merrills takes it up the middle for a four yard gain. On second and six, Dickerson takes it straight ahead for a gain of two. Merrills picks up 6 for the first. 1st and 10, Hollenbach's pass was dropped by Joey Haynos. On second down, Jo Jo makes a catch across the middle and gets it down to the 28. Merrills takes it for 3 up the middle on first down. On second down Hollenbach really dodged a bullet when his pass was dropped by the CB. Once again on third down he hits VD and comes up inches short. Ennis comes on and drills a 35 yard FG with 1:53 remaining in the 3rd. MD kicks off and it is returned to the 16. Whitehurst pass is complete to the 39. On first down, Chris Varner picks off a pass and returns it to the 39! On first down Weatherly looked open, but the safety came over from no where to break up the pass. Haynos drops the second down attempt. On third down, Hollenbach got lit up for a sack. 4th and 15 from the 44 brings on Podlesh. Once again it is in the end zone. 1:07 left in the third. On first down Clemson tries a pitch that is stopped 3 yards deep. On second down J.J. Justice got a sack on a safety blitz. On third down Whitehurst was hit by D'Qwell as he threw and let loose an end over end pass. (Podlesh's punts have been more of a spiral! Brings up 4th and 14 from their own 16. Jo Jo makes a nice return to the 38 as the third quarter expires. On first down a nice play action fake to Merrills leaves Dan Melendez wide open for a TD down the right sideline. Ennis XP is good, MD 24 CU 14 with 4:56 left. On first down, Whitehurst let one fly down to the MD 46 after the touch back. A direct snap to the FB results in a gain of 19 to the 17 after s nice spin move left the cyber Terps looking for his cyber protection. First down is an incomplete pass, and on second down Lemmons picks up his second sack for the day bringing up 3rd and 16. Whitehurst is forced up in the pocket and throws incomplete to the end zone. They elect to bring Dean on and he hooks the 40 yard attempt wide left. MD takes over with 3:36. Yet another play action to Drew Weatherly gets MD out to the 48 on first down. Not sure why Fridge is passing but Hollenbach overthrows Jo Jo down the left side. On second down they hand off to Dickerson for no gain. On third Merrills takes it 8 yards and Podlesh comes out again and yet again the kick goes into the end zone. 1:59 left Clemson takes over at their own 20. On first down, D'qwell forced and incomplete across the middle with a devastating hit. On second down Whitehurst pass was incomplete. On third down he hooked up with the TE for a first. Next play is a loss on a pass. Second down they get the ball to the 40 and bring up 3rd and 3. I am struggling to keep up with them during this hurry up offense. A HB screen gets them 2 yards. 4th and 1, is a handoff and Kershaw has a big hit jarring the ball loose. Clemson falls on it, but turns it over on downs. On first down Dickerson rumbles ahead for 11. TO Clemson. First and 10 with 50 seconds left is a handoff to Merrills who bounces it outside and down to the 7 and another first. TO Clemson. Hollenbach took a knee, last TO with 42 ticks on the clock. Another knee by Sam, and we are down to 28, 27... and oh my they hand it off to Merrills and he coughs it up on the 6 with 12 seconds left. Clemson recovers and takes over on their own 6. Kershaw makes another sack on the 1, as time expires. Big win for the Cyber Terps!!!
