Virigina Tailgate Wrap-Up:
By Bob W.
Overall:
Things are starting to get back to normal at D-7 Tailgate. My alarm was set for 5:00 am and even the wife was able to wake up with ease in anticipation of this 2005 Homecoming showdown with Virginia. We had our first taste of cold weather and ironically my worst case of sun burn for the year, all in one day. J did not disappoint with the best damn breakfast sandwiches in the Free State, and it was nice to see we were still able to get in some flip cup even with the light crowd. I guess everyone is just home resting up for the big Temple Trip we have coming up. We did have the Chimka clan to liven things up, though some of them were wearing a horrible blue-orange combination, but all fashion sense aside, they were great sports and able flip cup players.
Tailgate Highlights: The 6:00 am tailgate start was the highlight of the tailgate. Hear me out on this. I hate noon games, I hate waking up to an alarm clock, but there is something about hanging out in a parking lot drinking Bud Lights with your wife and friends and being able to see the stars in the sky. It is just something that makes you say to yourself I am STILL not a grown up. I STILL don’t see anything wrong with drinking before 7:00 AM. I am STILL way too irresponsible to be 30 next year. Every now and then you need something like a 6 am beer to remind you that you are not really as old as you think you should be. Here’s to irresponsibility!
Tailgate Lowlights: The 2005 UVA tailgating lowlight had to be the turn out in the parking lot. I am not talking about D-7. Sure we were light, but sometimes life gets in the way of tailgating (damn fall weddings). But D-7 was hardly alone in this. I thought this was homecoming, not an early season game against Eastern Michigan! Anyway, parking was ample right up until kick off and I was worried how many people were going to show up for the game. Luckily I was pleasantly surprised to see a full house and a crowd that was much more lively than the WVU game. But what’s the sense of going to a game and not tailgating? That’s just plain crazy!
Tailgate MVP:
Before we get into this weeks UVA Tailgate MVP, we have a little house cleaning to do. Since most of us were not able to make the trip to Wake we did not have a Wake Tailgate Wrap Up last week. But that does not mean there wasn’t a Wake Tailgate, and where there is a D-7 Tailgater tailgating, there is a D-7 Tailgating MVP. (Pause to catch breath)The Wake Forest D-7 Tailgate MVP is Jill T. Jill gets the nod last week for many reasons. One she took Brian out of Annapolis for the weekend which is always a treat. She then drank him under the table, took great pictures, and unlike so many other D-7 deadbeats contributed an article to the site. Congratulations Jill on your first of many D-7 Tailgating MVP’s! You truly are down with the sickness, and despite your boy having a 10 year head start in Maryland Tailgating you now lead him in career MVPs.
Now on to the UVA game. This was going to be easy, then it got tough, but J pulls out his first Tailgating MVP of the year. J is always a gamer and great on the grill, but the fact that he showed up for a game he wasn’t able to attend puts him ahead of the rest of us. J led early, despite forgetting his spatula, and managed to hang on. So there you go J. You are off the snide in 2005
Honorable Mention: The Chimka family had a great run at the big prize and as a result they are the honorable mention UVA Tailgating MVP’s. With out them we would not have had enough people to play flip cup (what a horrible thought). Though you could have made a correct call either way, I know the Chimka’s wouldn’t harass me nearly as much as J would if he didn’t get the MVP.
See you all at the Temple game. It won’t be televised so be there or be uninformed!
