Terrapin Rising Episode #2

By Bob W.

If I’ve learned anything in these last few weeks about myself, it’s pretty much that I could never be a quarterback.  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve known that for a long time obviously, I mean no one has ever watched a D7 tailgate Punt, Pass, and Kick competition and mumbled to themselves, “Wow what an arm on that Wevodau kid, too bad he wasted that talent playing soccer all those years!”.

But let’s say before my freshman year at college, the gods came down from the sky and with a flash of lightening and a rumble of thunder that would knock mortals to the ground, they said unto me:

“Robert Wevodau, we have blessed you with the arm strength of a man who is capable of carrying Maryland to the National Championship, now go walk onto the team and fulfill your destiny”.

It still wouldn’t have mattered.  Because if Terrapin Rising has shown me anything, it’s that the Quarterback Position is well behind my cerebral capabilities.   So I must say I’m impressed with the likes of Portis, Steffy, and Turner, and I now have a little more sympathy for Ricker.  I can’t imagine learning all those plays, reads, and formations, AND then doing all your regular school work.  When do you fit in your all those FIFA and Coach K tournaments?

So Episode 2 was pretty good.  I said this after Episode 1, and I’ll say it again, that this is a great idea.  It’s one thing to cheer for these guys every Saturday in the Fall, but after watching this show (and most certainly after week 10) I feel like I know these guys.  It makes the whole thing a little more personable.  And what a recruiting tool.  I’m half expecting the NCAA to shut this thing down next week saying it violates some rule.  But I love it.  Whoever came up with this idea is a genius, it’s almost like post it notes where you look at them and say “Wow why didn’t I think of something like this”.  Of course I wouldn’t of had the technology or access to pull it off, but I could at least be sitting here telling everyone “See I told you that was a good idea”.

Anyway this week we learned a little bit more about some of the other players.  It’s hard to get a real read because you don’t know how the tape has been edited, but it looks like that Wujciak kid is going to be a player.  I think it was Morgan Green who said he could end up being one of the best LB’s ever at Maryland.  Now that maybe a strectch, and who would have thought that one of the “Future” best ever LB’s at Maryland would look like some kid you expect to see at Ocean City with a boogie board attached to his wrist, but whatever.  I love the way he moves around the field, and for God’s sake, it looks like he enjoys himself out there.  You can’t put a price on that.

As for the Running Backs, I had forgotten all about Morgan Green taking Steve Slaton’s scholarship.  I’m glad he thinks about that a lot and hopefully that will motivate him.  But in all seriousness, I don’t think Slaton is that great.  Well let me take that back.  It seemed to me every time I watched Slaton last year, the WVU offensive line would have things so spread out for him, that he’d go 6 yards before he ever got touched.  So though he is a great RB obviously, I don’t think he’d be as successful at Maryland, and I feel Morgan could have been a lot more successful playing in that system.  We’ll see how it pans out.  Green still has a lot of year left at Maryland and he has a chance to make us all forget about Slaton, and hopefully he will.

So that’s about it for Episode 2.  We saw Ricker leave, and now I have a much better grasp on the situation.  We saw some unlucky injuries, and of course we saw Ralph going Ballistic.  A lot of people say when their time comes, they want to go out doing something they love.  I don’t think that will be a problem for Friedgen.  If I’ve learned anything from Terrapin Rising, it’s that Friedgen probably will die on the football field.  Probably right after Jordan Steffy incorrectly reads a blitz package.

I don’t know about you, but my tv didn’t show scenes for next week.  Hopefully it’s something good.  Until then, enjoy the last month of the year that’s sans Maryland Football.

Happy 4th of July, and GO TERPS!!
