“Challenge me to a game of horseshoes. . . A GAME OF HORSESHOES”

                        Arrested Development

Overall:  Sorry this has taken so long to get out.  My quote is from the old Classic Tennessee, and it seemed to me we were told we were going to play horseshoes, not football.  I told Bob I would take care of the recap, and was excited to do the first one of the year.   However, the way we played, or didn’t play really took the wind out of my sails.  I should have known I was in trouble when the game was blacked out on Comcast because it was on ESPN 360.  This sent me scrambling out to the front stoop with the laptop to try and connect to someone’s wireless connection that has Verizon.  Last year this worked great, but there was a big problem, Hannah, was creeping through Boston at the time, and my laptop isn’t one of those ones that has a laser attached that destroys moisture to protect the old PC like in that commercial.  So needless to say I didn’t get connected.  I did however remember seeing some MTSU fan post something about being able to get the game off their website, so $7 later I was in, just in time to see the fake punt.  Another sign we were doomed.  Having had several Days pass to let me attempt to digest this one. I came to one conclusion, this team looks like the type of product we put on the field during the glory days when we actually lived on D7.  The offense was poor, and we had two big plays go for scores.  No sustained drives.  The defense, looked even worse.  Missed tackles and just overall poor play.  No pressure on the QB, you name we did it wrong, or not at all.  Then we have the play calling.  The one that did me in, and I also got a text from an angry Bob as well, was the Portis runs on 3rd AND 4th down.  Franklin was supposed to bring this high powered offense in where we get it to the playmakers.  I guess they think Portis is the only play maker.  The play calling looks no different than it did last year.  We looked scared, and play not lose.  Let’s follow Herm Edwards’ saying.  “You play to win the game”.

I kept thinking to myself, we are moving the ball now lets roll.  That would be followed by an interception.  Turner looked worse than Steffy.  We scored, and then they followed right away and I knew we were doomed.  Again Obi, hits the upright.  I am starting to wonder if someone told him we get extra points for hitting the upright and banking it in.  He has hit the goal post three times this year, none of which have taken a friendly bounce.

Whats it all mean?  I was floored today to see that CBS Sportsline has us in the BOTTOM 10.  Can you believe that, actually I can.  Syracuse is also in there.  They must have sold their athletic departments sole to the devil to win the Basketball tournament after us as well.  The one good thing about being so far down, is we can really only go up!  Each week we seem to have more questions than answers, and that is not good.

Game highlights.  I guess I am going to go with the quick pass to Heyward-Bey that he made a couple of moves and was gone 80 yards.  It is a real shame we have him here, and not really getting to see what he can really do.  Get him the ball more.

Game Lowlights:  Everything, no TV for me to watch, to the play calling, to the play.  All around crappy night.

Game MVP:  Dar’el Scott.  11 carries 123 yards and a TD.  Really that is a pretty good average.  If it works don’t fix it.  Run the ball more to open up some passing.

Random Thought:  The new 90210.  I have now seen 2 episodes on this.  I kind of like it so far, but I am not married to it the way I was the original.  There are some interesting story lines, but I didn’t know they played LAX in Kansas!  Stay tuned to see if they captivate me.

Around the ACC:

Georgia Tech 19  Boston College 16

GT gets a safety and TD in the 4th quarter to cap the comeback.  GT looked pedestrian early, but Paul Johnson’s club got the offense rolling in the second half.

VT 24  Furman 7

The Tyrod Taylor redshirting experiment lasted all of one week ( a loss to ECU).  Taylor comes in and rushes for over a hundred yards to spark the Hokies

Wake Forrest 30 Mississippi 28.

Ole Miss took a lead with just about a minute to go.  Riley Skinner marched the Deacs into FG range and Sam Swank hits the game winner to keep at least one team in ACC in the top 25

Clemson 45 Citadel 17

Clemson will probably go on a roll now that they laid that egg early this year.  Spiller and Davis combined for over 180 yards rushing and 4 TD’s.

Virginia 16  Richmond 0

UVA might, just might be worse than us.  UVA held a 3-0 lead through 3 quarters before pulling away late.  I watched bits and pieces of this game, and it was painful.  I found myself pulling for Richmond.  It is probably why UVA pulled away.

FSU 69  Western Carolina 0

Well is this FSU team like the team from the early 90’s?  If so I feel the Terps are in trouble, and could lose by a score similar to this.  FSU dominated in all statistical categories including the scoreboard.

NCST 34 William and Mary  24

State went up 14-0 at the half, and hung on late for the win.  NCST is also not a good team.  At least we can compete with them and UVA!

Northwestern 24  Dook 20

This is going to sting for Dook.  They had to think this might have been their best chance to pick up a 2 win season.  There is always basketball dookies!

Florida 26  Miami 3

Miami only trailed 9-3 until the start of the 4th quarter before the Gators took over.  Miami has to feel good about this one.  They gave Florida everything they could handle for 3 quarters.   Look for Miami to surprise some teams in the ACC this year.
