Clemson Game Recap

Clemson Game Recap

 By Bob W.

Overall:

I really don’t know what to say about this.  It is very easy to sit here and assign blame.  A horrible Pass Interference call, a questionable no fumble call, a missed field goal that would have made all the difference in the world, an offense who without special teams should have only put up 3 points (or none).  Any angle you look at is not pretty.  The bottom line is that we are now 3-4 and it is looking highly unlikely we are going to be bowl bound.  I will ask this though.  Did any honest to God Terp fan really think we were going to win when we punted away to Clemson on that last drive?  I know I looked over at Kristin and even she knew what was about to happen (she was actually saying it all game long, but I didn’t believe her until then).  There was just something in the air in Death Valley.

Game Highlights:

A no brainer here, David Holloway’s blocked punt was the game highlight.  A great effort by the special teams and if it were the NFL, would have been a Touch Down.  I still don’t understand why the Ref throws a flag when Maryland was ruled down.  Did he mistake his flag for the little bean bag they carry?  Anyway, great job David Holloway, who not only had the game highlight, but is also the greatest college football player ever to suit up in Playstation 2’s NCAA 2004 Football.

Game Lowlights:

Das Boot ist nicht gut.  It is easy to over look his missed field goals the last few games because there have been sooooo many glaring weaknesses out there, the whole QB controversy for one.  Well what about a PK controversy?  I am one of Das Boot’s biggest fans, but he is killing us.  He is no longer automatic.  In fact I am now kind of surprised when he does make a kick.  Something is wrong with his confidence and Friedgon needs to address this ASAP.  I am not saying we would have won any of the last 3 games if he had done a better job, but it seems like his misses have lead to huge momentum shifts.  I would also like to add that our Offense once again struggled.  Take away Holloway’s blocked punt and we would have been shut out (or held to one FG).  It is our offenses job to win games, not rack up more yards then we have the last two weeks.

Game MVP:

Will there ever be another Offensive MVP?  I think Holloway made a huge play, but one play does not an MVP make.  The weeks handsdown MVP was D’Qwell Jackson.  18 tackles are you Effing kidding me!?!?  I guess that is what happens when our Defense gets so much playing time.  I’ll give an honorable mention to the entire defense.  Yes they looked soft on that last drive, but you hold an opponent to 10 points in their own stadium, good things are supposed to happen.

Extra Points:

Once again since there is no tailgate wrap up I would just like to end with a few points:

  • How many hits do you think FireRonZook.com received this weekend.  For those who don’t follow Mississippi State Football (which means everyone outside of Starkville), the mighty Bull Dogs of MSU defeated top 25 Florida on Saturday.  No big deal right? Wrong!  MSU won 2 games last year.  They won 1 game this year going into this match up.  They lost to Div IAA Maine!  They also lost 51-0 against LSU in a game where LSU was disappointed in their “turn over plagued” performance.  Sylvester Croom, this cow-bell’s for you!
  • Did anyone watch the PSU-Iowa game?  This is actually a trick question since it was on the same time as Maryland so I imagine everyone answered no.  We did flip a little back and forth during commercials and maybe this is why Maryland’s offensive woes didn’t seem as bad on Saturday.  6-4 is quite an accomplishment in the world of college football.
  • Another story lost in the Maryland disappointment was the FSU-Wake game.  I know I may regret this come next Monday, but I am calling for a Maryland upset over FSU.  Something has got to give and if the Terps go out with a “Things can’t get any worse so we might as well go out there and fight like hell and throw caution to the wind” attitude, AND the Noles show up with the same squad who showed up against Syracuse and Wake, it could happen.  I believe.

Go Terps!
