Duke Recap

This is supposed to be snow

“10 inches of snow and the Maryland-Duke game.  What else could you ask for?”

                        -Bob W.

Well that was my feeling when I woke up this morning, but here I sit ready to do another recap of a loss, while looking out the window at the pouring rain.  I don’t know where to begin with this one.  I mean seriously, we are unranked, they are #2.  It really would have been a tough one to gut out.  But then on the other hand, Va Tech, FSU, and BC all came within a hair of beating them so why not us.  I guess it is that I sometimes forget in this rivalry that we no longer as good as we were 2 years ago.

What bothers me most is that I’m not sure what we did wrong, or could have done better.  I really think everyone that had to, stepped up and played as best as they could.  We were one point away from having every starter in double digits, yet it still wasn’t enough.  The good news is that I saw the same spirited effort that the team displayed against UVA and NC State, which kind of gives me a strange sense of confidence heading down the stretch.  The bad news is that we are going to need it.   Here is how we finish:

@ Clemson

Ga Tech

@ FSU

@ UNC

Miami

@ UVA

We must win out at home obviously, then take one on the road. That would give us a shot at 18-9 (8-8), to quote Lloyd Christmas “So you are saying there is still a chance”.

A better scenario would be to win two on the road, but let’s worry about that after we beat Clemson this week.  The 6 game season begins now, let’s show the NCAA’s how bad we want to dance.

D-7 MVP-  It seems like I have been calling his name a lot lately, but how can you not.  Led team in scoring, second in rebounding, tied for the most assists and steals.  That formula gets you the D-7 MVP every time.  And if I can take a moment to set the record straight, I have always viewed NCM as a sort of disappointment, padding the stats in the easy games, and disappearing in the big ones.  I think it is time for me to remove that label from him.  Keep playing like this Nik and no one will be able to call the class of 2006 a total disappointment.

Honorable Mention:  James Gist gets the Honorable mention.  1 board away from a double-double.  The only concern is the 6-16 shooting.  I’m really interested in watching his final two years at Maryland.

Random Thought of the Day:  Two thoughts for today (look at the big brain on Bob).  For the NHL betting ring, when will this madness end.  I’m not talking about the lies and illegal activity, I’m talking about referring to Janet Jones as an actress.  Please, I drew a picture 20 years ago and my mom put it on the fridge, that doesn’t make me an artist.  She should be known as Wayne Gretzky’s wife.  Nothing more.

Second thought, just when you couldn’t feel any worse, you open up the ESPN website and Michelle Kwan is on the front page talking about her body breaking down and how over the hill she it.  The Chicks 25!!

The “It Could be Worse” Section:  You could actually be a Duke student.

Enemy of the State:  JJ Redick.  At least he won’t have Maryland to kick around much longer.

Factoid Alert:  On ESPN’s box score they have Chris McCray down for 1 offensive rebound….uh did I miss something?

If you had to pick someone who could have played better you could have pointed at Ekene.

Luckily he was at the Library so he didn’t have to watch the loss.

So much for the “Start Neal to punch JJ in the face at the tip” idea.
