Duke Game Recap

Duke Game Recap

Overall:

Well I only got to listen to the first half of the game on the radio, and what I heard I didn’t like.  I do like that the Terps went into half time and came out ready to play.  The offense had little trouble moving the ball, but those darn turnovers really annoyed me. With that being said though, I think we need to realize that Joel is the man for 2004 so we might as well get behind him. The defense looked good and had it not been for special teams, and Joel’s TD pass to the Dukies, the score would have been 55-7 (which would have sent more of a message to Ga. Tech).

Game Highlights:

The highlight of the game had to be Vernon Davis’s performance. The kid played well.  I am not sure when the last time a Maryland TE scored 3 TD’s in one game, but I don’t think it has happened recently.

Game Lowlights:

The low light again was turnovers.  We can get away with 3 turnovers against the likes of Northern Illinois, Temple, and Duke, but we can not do that against Georgia Tech, NC State, Clemson, and FSU.  In fact in order to beat FSU we will have to play turnover free, I don’t know if we are capable of that.  Another low light was the kick off return for Duke.  We lucked out this time, but in a game like that, you don’t want to give the opposition any momentum.  Based on the post game press conference though, the Fridge is going to address this issue.

Game MVP:

It looked like the Dukies had a nasty case of V.D. on Saturday.  So the MVP has to go to Vernon Davis and his 3 TD’s and over 100 yards receiving (101, but over 100 yards sounds better).  Joel is an honorable mention, but I will never give the MVP to a player who turns the ball over 3 times, unless his name is Chris Rix.

Extra Points:

Since no one from D-7 attended the Duke game (nor did anyone else in North Carolina for that matter), there will be no tailgate recap this week.  In lieu of the tailgate recap I am unveiling a new feature to the game recap.  Being that traveling to Terp’s games, drinking for 12 hours and passing out by 9pm doesn’t really allow one to take in other college football games, I am going to share my observations from my tailgate free weekend.  Here they are in no particular order:

  • Mississippi State is the worst team in Division I football.
  • Penn State’s offense is about as exciting and colorful as their uniforms.
  • The Wisconsin “Jump Around” between the 3rd and 4th quarter is pretty cool.
  • The Stanford radio announcers are about as unbiased as any radio announcers I have ever listened to.  I don’t even think they wanted Stanford to win that game.
  • Special teams can make or break a season, just ask Virginia Tech…..or NC State.
  • The Maryland-Wake Forrest game concerns me a little more every week.
  • The NC State offense really misses Phillip Rivers.
  • The NC State defense doesn’t miss anyone.
  • The guy who does the Duke pre-game on the Duke Radio Network has the toughest job in the world, getting people excited for a Duke football game.
