MD Vs. UNC

Ea Sports Simulation Results

For Game to be Played 1/8/2005

“Live” from the Smith Center

Note:  Actual game time was 15 minute halves (I increased it from 10 to give it a more realistic score).  You try and watch 40 minutes of Simulated bball and take notes on that!

Well Dickie V and his EaSports co-host Brad Nessler were very fired up for this game, and the crowd wasn’t that wine and cheese crowd that Sam Cassell used to speak of, in fact our friends at Ea dubbed the joint the #7 toughest place to play.  The Smith Center was rocking and Dickie V. was all juiced to see the match up of premier point guards going head to head.  Had great things to say about Gilchrist and Felton.  Also to note it appears as if though Nik Canner-Medley will regain his starting spot.  I was not about to do it again!

Md started the game by making their first two shots, however still trailed, because UNC made their first two as well, one being a three from Melvin Scott.  Md went on to miss their next six shots (a stat Ea loves to point out during games).  After that they seemed to get comfortable and the action and scoring went back and forth as we took a 14-12 lead.  A Chris McCray 3 point play gave the Terps a 17-12 lead that was quickly answered by a Jawad Williams 3 pointer “the old fashioned way” according to Dukie V.  Melvin Scott then gave UNC the lead at 20-19 with a three pointer “the new fashioned way” I guess you could say.  UNC extended the lead to 25-19 with an 8-0 run.   Canner-Medley finally ended the run with a three.  Ibekwe picked up his second foul and James Gist is the first player off the bench for either team.  These simulated players seem to have great stamina.  (Something I need to look into for the next game).  UNC is dominating the glass to this point with a 15-8 lead with 3:15 left in the first half.  Thanks to the graphics guy for throwing me that bone!  Canner-Medley seems to think he is Tim “Whitey” Legler and begins launching threes from everywhere on the court, and sinks one to cut the score 33-29.  McCray follows with another 3 and cuts the lead to one.  Then big Wil checks in when Garrison picks up his second foul with 2:00 minutes left in the half.  At the half the score is 42-38 in favor of the heels.

The action in the second half picks up UNC pulls away in the first few minutes of the half.  A Jawad Williams dunk gives UNC a 42-53 lead with 11:45 remaining.  At the 11 minute mark the score is 57-42, as Md scores only four points in the first 4 minutes of the half.  DJ Strawberry connects on 3 to cut the lead to 62-56 as the Terps make a little run behind some solid interior D by Garrison (see boxscore).  A Garrison block on the arc leads to a coast to coast dunk to cut the lead to 2 for the Terps.  At this point I am thinking, this sounds about right for this team.  Get down big, make a nice comeback.  I was wondering if they would pull it out, or would they fall flat on their faces, now they are in striking distance.  Well they appear to fall flat on their faces, and they are quickly down 71-62 after clawing back into it.  Hope is restored after Nik gets fouled shooting a three by Felton, makes the three and the ensuing FT to get us back into it at 71-66 with 4:17 remaining.  A Garrison bucket over Sean May cuts the lead to 2 again at 72-70 with 3:29 to go.  Gilchrist forces a steal and time-out is called with 57.7 seconds left and the Terps trailing 78-72.  Out of the time out Nik misses a 3 and the Terps are forced to foul.  Jawad Williams converts both stretching the lead to 8.  McCray nails a three and the lead is 5 with 27 left to play.  This time Felton converts both FT’s and Canner Medley misses his three again as UNC run out the final 14 seconds.   Final score UNC 82-  Terps 75.
