Northern Illinois Game Recap
By Bob W.
My take on the game:
Overall: A win is a win is a win. When you stop and think about it, we haven’t been 1-0 in over 2 seasons. Yes the play was sloppy and the game was a lot closer than we liked, but at least we got some crucial playing time for a lot of up and comers. They could have just as easily gotten their ears wet during a loss so we will take what we can from this. The bottom line is that Maryland is 1-0!!!!
Game Highlights: Wow Vernon Davis (who they call Dutch on TV) is going to be a hell of a player and the Fridge is going to do what he can to get him the ball. Sammy and Josh both looked excellent and it appears that the RB position is in great shape. Merriman had an excellent game and looks to live up to his tat’s and our shirts. D’Qwell Jackson is just another in a long line of recruits that no one else wanted except for Maryland. Good work on bringing him in. Oh and also Novak is automatic.
Game Lowlights: Hold on to the ball!! Joel Statham looked overwhelmed at some times and a little nervous. They say this kid has been running the option his entire life, well then what the hell was all of that? I don’t fault him for that last fumble since he didn’t even have time to react, but he needs to cut down on turnovers. We aren’t expecting a QB to win games for us right now, but we are asking for a QB who won’t lose games for us either. Overall though I thought he did have some nice plays and showed what he could become.
Game MVP: I am going with D’Qwell Jackson. He had like 9 tackles and 2 interceptions. I thought he played great and proved that he was not just a one year wonder (not that anyone thought that). I just love to watch him play. He is going to be great. My honorary mention for MVP goes to Nick Novak. Lets face it, we are spoiled right now when it comes to kicking. And if you think that isn’t a great problem to have, watch the LSU-Oregon State replay.
