Georgia Tech Forecast

Georgia Tech Forecast:

“What school would name their mascot after an insect that tries to hide in beers and ruin tailgates?”

Chief D-7 Meteorologist Bob Wevodau

Well I certainly hope we are 3-1 going into this one or else we are in for a long year.  Since Mother Spurrier is gone, I will assume we will beat Duke and will be looking to go 4-1 against the Jackets and let’s hope so because after the Tech game, the schedule gets a little brutal.  Now the Jackets stung us last year by knocking out our QB, they may want to be more careful this year.  If I was a Tech defender I would take extra care of Statham out there.  But enough about football lets get to the tailgating weather:

The average high for October 9 in College Park, MD is 71F°.   The low is about 49F°.    The record high for the date is a rather warm 85F° (1949) and the record low is a darn near freezing 33F° (1933).  Summer just seems to fading further and further away doesn’t it?

Well I checked the farmer’s almanac and I don’t like, not one bit.  If I were Steve Spurrier I would rip my visor off my head, spike it into the ground and scream “Aww Gee Wiz”. (Don’t know why I keep referring to him, must be tomorrows Duke game).  I won’t sugar coat this for you, the almanac has heavy showers moving into the mid atlantic on the 9th of October.  We got away from Ivan out in Morgantown, we will squeeze the Duke game in before Jean, so I don’t know how much more we can luck out.  Last forecast I pretty much overruled the almanac and went with my heart.  It turned out to be a dead on forecast (thank you very much) but I am going to go with the almanac for the Tech game.  I just feel like with as much weird weather out there this fall, we are due.  So here is my forecast:

The forecast for the October 9, 2004 “Jacket Smack it” game is for a horrible rainy day.  This one is going to be ugly, but we are strong and will get through it.  The morning temp should be in the low 60’s which won’t be too cold.  However the afternoon really won’t warm up much.  I am predicting a high in the mid to low 60’s.  The precipitation is going to be lots, I can’t predict how much, that is much beyond my capabilities, but lets just say bring your ponchos.  Keep in mind though, I am putting a lot of faith in the farmers for this one, so watch for updates.

The game time sunrise for College Park is for 7:12 am.  And the sunset is scheduled for 6:37 pm.  To my knowledge, they have not announced a game time yet (Chris feel free to correct that if I am wrong) so we don’t know what affect the sun will have on the game.

Look here for further updates, as we get closer to game day.

  • The X Factor- 1987 - Eighteen cities in the southeastern U.S. and the Middle Atlantic Coast Region reported record low temperatures for October 9. Asheville NC dipped to 29 degrees, and the record low of 47 degrees at Jacksonville FL marked their fourth of the month. A second surge of cold air brought light snow to the Northern Plains, particularly the Black Hills of South Dakota. (The National Weather Summary)
  • 1988 - Ten cities in the northeastern U.S. reported record low temperatures for Oct 9.  Hartford CT had a reading of 28 degrees. Snow continued in northern New England through the morning hours. Mount Washington NH reported five inches of snow. Could someone remind me again why we thought it was necessary to extend the ACC up into New England???? (Weatherforyou.com)

***This is a disclaimer to remove all responsibility on myself if this forecast is wrong.  Being that it is very difficult to predict the weather greater than 48 hours in advance, the odds of needing this disclaimer are about 100%.  However I do believe this forecast will be pretty close to what we can actually look to expect
