Liberty

By Bob W.

For those of us who want Gilchrist to remain for his senior year this was a terrible game.  The Junior point guard racked up his 5th straight game with more than 20 points.  Shot 5-9 from behind the arc, 5-6 from the line, and had 28 points (one FG away from the elite 30 point club).  Other than Gilchrist’s NBA stock going up, the Terp faithful got just what they wanted out of last nights game.  Maryland after falling behind 6-4 early in the game really never looked back.   In the first half alone they put together a 13-2 run, a 12-0 run, and a 16-1 run.  That is a total of 41-3.  Liberty showed some life in the second half only being outscored by 11, but the 52-19 halftime score was well more than any team could make up.  Liberty was outmatched at every aspect of this game:

In the paint-Liberty 28, Maryland 62

2nd Chance points- Liberty 11, Maryland 24

Fast Break Points- Liberty 4, Maryland 23

Points off of TO’s- Liberty 2, Maryland 23

Bench Points- Liberty 9, Maryland 37

That my friends is the key to success, however we don’t have many more Liberty games left on the schedule.  Though a good game to work on some aspects and to get the reserves some playing time, we have to keep in mind this is a team that is 1-8 with their only win against Juan Dixon’s older brothers alma mater (and Jason’s) Shenandoah.  I think they went to overtime to win that one also.

John Gilchrist- A

The good:  He didn’t get an A+ because we have to keep him humble, shot excellent from everywhere.

The bad:  3 assists, 2 turnovers, not the best ratio, but we will take it.

Travis Garrison- B

The good:   Perfect from the line 2-2, and 3 blocks

The bad:  Only had 8 points, but than again only played 19 minutes

Nik Caner-Medley- A

The good:  9-12 from the field, 2-3 from the foul line, 5 boards, 20 points, and 5 Steals (watch out Johnny Rhodes!!).

The bad:  Seems to always dominate against the scrub teams and then doesn’t show up against the good teams.  Oh well hopefully he can ride this performance into Chapel Hill.

Ekene Ibekew- B

The good:  12 Rebounds, and 6 blocks!!

The bad:  Shot 3-10 from the field, and only had 6 points.  The blocks and rebounds kept his grade up.

Chris McCray- B

The good:  Shot 6-9 for 13 points, 5 rebounds.

The bad:  There really wasn’t anything bad about his game it just wasn’t an A performance.

DJ Strawberry- C

The good:  3 assists no turnovers, 7 points

The bad:  0-3 from behind the arc, 1-3 from the foul line.

Sterling Ledbetter-C

The good:  He gets an automatic one grade improvement just because he stepped on the court.

The bad:  9 minutes, 1 assist, 1 point, 1 TO

James Gist- A

The good:  7-12 for 14 points, 8 rebounds, in only 20 minutes of play.  Give this kid 30 minutes or more and he is going to be a star.

The bad:  No assists, how about a kick out every once in a while???

Mike Grinnon- B

The good- I never know what to give these guys, he did shot 2-2 for 6 points in 8 minutes, so you could say if he played the whole game he would have had 30 points, just give him a chance Gary!!!

The bad:  Not much bad, but I can’t give him an A!

Mike Jones- C-

The good- Got some playing time, 5 points in 9 minutes

The bad- 0-2 from 3 point land, 1 for 4 from the field and 3-6 from the line.

Will Bowers- B

The good- Much PT, 7 boards in 18 minutes

The bad- Not much bad, but again, I can’t justify giving him an A.

Gini Chukura- C

The good- he got in the game and grabbed a rebound.

The bad- I lost my bet that there would never be a guy named Gini on the University of Maryland Basketball Team.
