Maryland @ UNC 05

UNC Game Recap
Overall:
Can’t say I am looking forward to writing up this one. As I think of what to say I can’t help but look up at the magnet on my file cabinet that mockingly says “No Better Time to be a Terp”. I guess they forgot to put the word “Lady” between “A” and “Terp” (on a happier note way to go Lady Terps, great W).
If there is a website devoted to Liberty athletics, I now feel for the person who had to write up the Liberty-Maryland basketball game back in December. For on January 8, 2005 we were Liberty and we were out of our league.
When I woke up on Saturday morning, counting down the minutes until tip off, I had a brief conversation with Snively downstairs. We both agreed that nothing bad could happen today. The way we saw it was that Maryland is certainly not going to go undefeated in the conference, and if we are going to lose games, losing to the #4 team in the Nation on their home court was certainly understandable. We had a chance to win, and no biggie if we lost….unless we get crushed by 30 or something. At that last point we both chuckled. Oh if we could have held it to just 30.
First Half:
Maryland came out strong in the first half and really
showed the heels what was up. We got up by 5 after about 6 minutes into the
game and I kept saying to myself “Man we are sooooo underrated”. Well as to be
expected UNC came back to make it even, they cut it to 3, then even, then up 3,
then up more and more and more. I kept thinking “if we could just cut it to
(insert single digit number here) by half time we will be fine”, then I kept
thinking “if we could just cut it to (insert any double digit number here) by
half we’ll be ok”. Finally I was thinking “Wow what a nice day outside, maybe I
will go for a walk in the second half”. As usual Maryland sprung a leak and no
one bothered bailing. Usually in games we win, when things go wrong someone
(read Gilchrist) takes the team on his back and leads the team back from the
depths. Well Gilchrist can’t do it all, and while he was being held in check
everyone else was just kinda sleep walking wondering when John was going to take
over. He never did and the game was over by half time.
Second Half:
Think back to the last level of basketball you played. Remember before the game when you would form two lines one person would run and do a lay-up and the other one would rebound and pass it out to the next person. Well that was basically the second half.
Report Card (there is going to be a lot of upset parents):
Travis Garrison: D The Good: Was tied for the team lead with 13 points. The Bad: 5-12 from the field, 1 for 5 from 3 point land, 3 boards (did you know not one Terp had more than 4 boards, disgusting).
Nik Caner Medley: D The Good: Did make it to double digit points so we will give him credit for that. Also had 3 steals. The Bad: 3-8 from the field and 0-4 from 3 land. Also had 3 TO’s.
Ekene Ibekwe: F The Good: Did get hurt. The Bad: 1 for 4 from the field, 2 boards, 3 points, and just to add on to the resume 5 personal fouls.
John Gilchrest: C The Good: 5-8 from the field, 1-2 from 3. 4 boards (doesn’t sound like much, but it lead the team), 11 points. The Bad: He is the team leader, the team got crushed therefore he can’t get any higher than a C. Certainly not all his fault.
Chris McCray: F The Good: 7-8 from the foul line. Admirable, but wait until you read the bad. The Bad: Shot 3-17! (Makes Billy Ripken look like Ichiro), 0 for 6 from behind the arc.
DJ Strawberry: D The Good: Had 8 points in 18 minutes and 2 steals. The Bad: 1 rebound, 3 TO’s no Assists.
Sterling Ledbetter: D- The Good: 3 assists to 1 TO. The Bad: 1 basket and only 2 attempts in 15 minutes?!
James Gist: B- The Good: He gets a little leniency since he is just a freshman. 3-4 from the field and from the foul line. HUGE put back early on, 9 points. The Bad: Only 2 rebounds in 23 minutes
Mike Jones: F The Good: Got 2 points The Bad: 1 for 4 from the field, and 0-3 from behind the arc. If he can’t shot, what other value does he have? Hopefully he can turn it around though.
Will Bowers: C The Good: 2 for 2 from the line, I used to not think so, but big Will might just be alright one day. The Bad: 0-2 from the field, only 2 boards in 13 minutes.
Gini Chukura: INC Only 1 minute of play. |
