MD at BC Dec 10, 2006 By Chris B Well once again the beloved Terps come to Boston, and once again I witness a dissapointment. This time it was the hoops team. There was reason for optimism for this one. The team bounced back nicely against Fordham after the Notre Dame lost in the BB and T classic and BC had lost earlier in the season to Vermont at home. Well thanks to EBay and some really poor BC fans I was able to score the tickets at face value (plus shipping). Not to shabby. The Conte Forum holds a little more than 8,000 and it was not full for a conference game against the number 22 team in the country? Someone tell me again why they are in the conference. It is obvious Tom O'Brien got the hint that other schools take their College Sports a little more serious. Anywho, enough BC bashing, there were a good amount of MD fans in the house, and we were actually sitting next to a pair of them. We sat 35 rows behind the MD bench and had pretty good seats. When the place only holds 8000 how bad can they be? Game time, they announce the MD players and after Mike Jones, I let out a "Who". It was his home coming game and there were lots of shirts behind the bench with 23 and Jones on them. As the game stars, I barely had time for my bleachers (yes that is right bleacher seats) to start hurting my back before DJ picked up two quick fouls. Oh this can't be good, Vazquez trying to muscle up with Dudley. The one thing he did was frustrate him even if he was scoring against him, but you could tell Vasquez was frustrating him. It really didn't matter though because MD played like a bunch of foreign exchange students who were just learning what basketball was. Ibekwe had hands of stone, and a brilliant touch from the free throw line that lead to an 0-4 in the first half. Jones, looked lost on defense again. Gist played well, and tried to keep them in the game, but really couldn't do it himself. So Osby checks in played well. I'm not sure he will ever be a go to guy in the paint that we can count on night in and night out, but he certainly is giving everything he has. The team stuck in there early, but by the half things were looking like this team may not be much different than teams of the recent past, but this was the first conference game for the freshman, and it showed. Even though we were down about 10, and Jones missed the dunk at the end of the half, I still felt there was a bit of chance, because BC was kind of playing like they too were exchange students, but they had been here a year longer. Every time they gave us a chance to get back in the game, we would turn it over, or DJ would force the action. Will he ever learn to let the game come to him instead of forcing the action when it is not there? We did cut it to 3 on an MJ three after he got out of the dog house (and the MD fans were vocal and loud), but BC quickly answered. In the end Dudley was too much for the Terps, and Sean Williams blocked 7 shots (that were destined to go in) to make the difference. It was a sloppy game, and the BC fan sitting beside me was saying that is a typical effort for BC and was beside himself as much as I was. |
