Terps Vs. Memphis

Hall Of Fame Tip-Off Classic

By Chris B.

Well on the eve before the final football game for the '04 season, the Bball team had their biggest test to date.  Thus far they have played games against overmatched teams in the friendly confides of the Comcast Center.  Well, that was all about to change this evening against the 25th ranked Tigers of Memphis.

First Half

Well the team must have listened in practice this week.  Everything you read about the team revolved around running good half court "O".  Well in the first half this team was running it like Steve Blake and Juan Dixon were out there.  The guards were making nice cuts through the lane, and we dominated the points in the paint, thanks to the guards.  McCray was getting into the lane easily, Gilchrist was able to penetrate against a freshman point guard, we were able to feed the post, however the big men were not able to convert.  Overall, this was as unselfish as I have seen this bunch of Terps play together.  Highlight for me was Gist (AKA Jist) cut baseline and woofed it on someone's head after a nice inside dish, from Ibekwe I Believe.

Second Half

Well what ever G Dub said in the locker room should be bottled up.  They came out and made sure we would rest easy in the second half as they pulled away with stiffening defense and easy baskets.  I dozed off for a minute with about 6 minutes remaining in the game and when I awoke about 1 minute later Darien Henry was in the game.  At that point it was garbage time baby!  Of course Dukie Vitale still found a way to plug his favorite team, but I must admit he was singing our and the conference's praise.  "if this is the 6th best team in the conference, this is the number one conference BABY!"  I like to think we are better than 6th best, but only time will tell.  I feel bad for VT, Miami, and FSU.  FSU lost to someone hurting again last night.  Highlight for me was a toss up between, the girl in pink behind Calipari, and Gist's two handed reverse alley-oop from Gilchrist.
