Miami Recap
“Total Destruction”
Bob W.
I tried for the picture to get the one I had of Brian standing in front of the tree in our front yard that went down after Tropical Storm Isabelle, but we are currently having computer problems. Speaking of Isabelle and computer problems (that right there could be one of the best transitions of my life!), we had a little incident with both back in December.
Our Dell had not been doing so good, so I had been spending a lot of time on the phone with their support staff. We tried everything, but in the end it still doesn’t work. So after on particularly long phone call with my now close friends at Dell, we decided to put the computer back away and regroup. Meanwhile we were getting ready for our Nashville trip and it was time for us to put Isabelle back in her tank (she’s our turtle for those who don’t know) and we could not find her anywhere. Granted we have a new house so we haven’t really established where her “go to” spots are yet, so it didn’t seem that unusual. But after back to back days of tearing apart the house, we started to panic.
Time came for our Nashville trip and we had to leave still not knowing where she was. We were kind of hoping she would get hungry and come out looking for food, or would at least crap on the floor to give us a sign that she is still around. But when we returned from Tennessee, there was still nothing. At this time we started to give up. We figured she somehow got out, or crawled into a box or bag that we inadvertently threw away. We were bummed. Not only at the thought of losing her, but the thought she could be at the land fill right now, or outside somewhere freezing to death.
Then, on “Isabelle Search-Day 10”, after going through one more search we finally sat on the couch and accepted that she was gone. Well it hadn’t of been for more than a half hour when Kristin hit the mute button on TV and said “I think I hear something”. She ran into the office and yelled out “Isabelle’s in the computer!!”. So we tore the cover off and low and behold there was the poor girl looking up at us! She somehow got into the computer when we had it opened up and we never noticed her when we put the cover back on. We set the computer back up right which would have turned Isabelle on to her side, and there she sat (or probably slept) for 10 days.
My only regret, other than trapping her in the computer for a week and a half of course, was that we didn’t take the computer in to Best Buy or somewhere. Can you imagine, being a tech and opening up a computer to see a turtle in there? “Well Mr. Here’s your problem!!”. Not to mention all the computer speed jokes that never got made! Anyway, if your still reading you may be wondering what this has to do with the Maryland-Miami game and… well…. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!
What a terrible game! Of course we got tickets from my father in law and got to see the in competency up close and personal. We shot 20% in the first half, and not much better in the second! Do you want to read about that!?!?
Turning Point- I don’t know if “Turning Point” is going to be a regular feature in the Basketball game write ups, but I thought this was worth pointing out. You won’t see this in the box score or most other articles about this game, but when Osby got his 1st and 2nd fouls on two ticky-tak calls, it cost us the game. Think about it. Miami was without their best big man, and who do we go to off the bench? Osby. But when he picked up a couple quick cheap fouls he was basically pulled from the game. He never got involved! He had 2 points and 2 boards. Say he never got those cheap fouls, or more realistically only got one. He wouldn’t have been pulled so quickly into the game, and he would have gotten into a rhythm and wouldn’t have played so tentative the rest of the way. When we shot 22%, it’s easy to see that a little more inside presence would have made a world of difference.
D-7 MVP- This one goes to Mike Jones. This could possibly be the worse MVP performance ever turned in, but on January 10th, it was good enough. Jones started off hot drilling a couple 3’s, but that didn’t last too long. He did finish with 17 points and shot 8-11 from the foul line which helped.
Honorable Mention: The thought of giving out two awards from this mess is a little tough to swallow, but I’ll go with Ibekwe. Sure he was 1 of 5, but he was 8-8 from the free throw line. He also grabbed 8 boards.
Random Thoughts: Has anyone else noticed that Will Bowers NEVER gets a call? Honestly, if the whistle blows and it’s between some other player and Will Bowers, you always know it is going to go against us. It is almost laughable. It’s borderline discrimination against giant awkward white guys. Watch the next few games and see how many whistles in Will Bo’s vicinity are actually for us.
Enemy of the State: Shocker. Same old story. Maryland kid spurned by Maryland, comes back to College Park and beats us. Jack McClinton had 12 points, which though on paper doesn’t look like much, but when you factor in the final score, this was the equivalent of like 20.
Bubble Watch: A most discouraging loss last night, but if the season ended today, I say were still in. Record now: 14-3 Conference Record 0-2 Quality Wins: Michigan State, Illinois Bad Losses: Miami at home. Outlook: Just when we think we have this team figured out, they go out and pull of something like this.
