Missouri Recap

“The Border State Battle”

                                    Bob W.

That is obviously more of a title than an opening quote, but my original opening quote was going to be “Over the last two game (list the entire roster) have combined for 2 more threes than Bob W.”, but that seemed a little lengthy.  So where should we begin.  I think the most glaring problem seems to be the lack of outside shooting.

Dickie V said time and time again that this is one of Gary’s least talented teams, and unfortunately he is right.  However, Dickie V also added that Maryland is going to shock a lot of teams this year too because they are so young and have a lot of upside.  Now Dickie V believes that, and I believe that, or at least did believe that, but I’m not so sure now.  If upsets were “Murders” (I watched Law and Order last night) the main murder weapon would be the three pointer.  Maryland however, is not a proponent of the 2nd amendment if you get my drift, so how exactly are we supposed to pull off these future upsets?

I don’t know either.  Anyway, this loss certainly wasn’t an end of the world loss.  I mean the schedule may say it was on a neutral court, but playing Missouri in Missouri is not exactly neutral.  Missouri is good, but I do have a problem with their coach.  He uses the Arkansas Forty Minutes of Hell philosophy, but calls it “The Show”.  I threw up in my mouth when I heard that.  You basically take a great philosophy and a killer nickname and turn it into a friggin cliché.  That’s not right.  That is like taking the Mona Lisa and pasting a yellow smiley face sticker on her head.

Forty Minutes of Hell used to mean something to our generation, it was an attitude, it was something to be feared and it is a motto that also has many real world applications.  I know back in our younger days, when you’d spot a girl at the bar you’d say to your buddy “I’m giving that girl the Arkansas” and by that you meant you were going to relentlessly pursue her and not take no for an answer (my dating philosophy was more of the Princeton offense…insert your own backdoor joke here, but that isn’t what I’m implying!!).

Now flash back to the bar again and your buddy leans over to you and says “I’m going to give that girl over there ‘The Show’”.  You’d be like “Hey…you do that…(what the hell is he talking about??)”.  So basically if Missouri is going to run the 40 minutes of hell, you don’t have to rename it.  In the NFL everyone uses the West Coast Offense, they’re not afraid of giving credit where credit is due, so neither should Missouri.  We may have lost the game, but Missouri has done irreversible damage to the Karma and Bar Scene Gods.

Turning Point-  Well we led for about 10 seconds in this one, so you can’t really say there was a turning point, it was more of accepting the inevitable than so much a turning point.  I thought when Carroll got into foul trouble that we’d be able to make a run, but that wasn’t the case.  So I’m going to have to leave this one blank.

D-7 MVP- Anyone like to tell me why UMTerps.com doesn’t have the stats up for this one?  It is killing me.  I’m going to have to go with the Sun’s box score which is pretty elementary to say the least, but since no one really stood out, and an MVP must be picked, I’m going with Osby.  I know I cuss him more than anyone, but look at what everyone else shot.  Osby was 4-6 and 3-3 from the line for 11 points.  Vasquez had more points, but he also had a hell of a lot more shots.

Honorable Mention:  Honorable Mention goes to James Gist.  That kid has some leaps.  No matter what he does the rest of his life, he can at least fall back on having the first ever dunk in the Sprint Center, no it wasn’t in the Missouri game, but still.  Back to yesterday, Gist had 12 points with 5-11 shooting and 2-2 from the line.

Random Thoughts: I forget what game it was, I’m thinking possibly the Denver-Tennessee Monday night game.  I believe Denver called a TO as Tenn was kicking, but the kicker missed, then after they tried again the kicker made it.  That may have been the NFL highlight of the year for me.  PLEASE NFL get rid of the stupid last second TO to ice the kicker.  I have no idea why coaches do it, and it was only a matter of time before it blew up in someone’s face.

Enemy of the State: That Lyons kid had 23 points.  I’d list his first name, but UM Terps is whoring me.  I hope they figure out this stats stuff ASAP or else this is going to be a terrible year for recapping.

Bubble Watch:

A little early for this, but I have to believe we are on the outside looking in until further notice.

Record now: 3-2

Conference Record 0-0

Quality Wins

Bad Losses

Outlook:  SI does not have us in their top 65 teams.  I have to agree….for now.
