Mount Saint Mary's At Maryland 1/3/05
By Chris B. Well I was up against a wall with a tough decision. Do I watch the Terps vs the Mt. exclusively, or do I flip back and forth with the USC vs OU National Championship game. Well I flipped for a bit, and both games were about as fun as watching paint dry. So this recap is not as good as usual. The first half was interesting due to the fact Dj got the nod over Nik Canner-Medley. Dj really did nothing to say this spot is mine and you aren't getting it back. In fact he was hurting! Nik on the other hand checked in with Gist, and Bowers around halfway through the half, and took matters into his own hand. He scored early, as did the Terps after slow start for both teams. The full court press affected the Mt. like it would anyone not used to playing this caliber athletes. Tunrovers became easy baskets, and the route was on to the tune of 47-25 at the half. The second half was a lot of the same and some good minutes for the reserves ensued. I did think Sterling Ledbetter looked decent enough to prove that he should be able to spell Gilchrist a bit once we get to the ACC games. He certainly looked like he belonged out there more than MJ! Final score 85-53. We dominated every category you would expect in a game like this, points in paint, fast break points, second chance, FG % etc. etc. The cupcakes are over and the rubber hits the road this week. We head to the wine and cheese crowd at the Dean Dome on Saturday for a noon tip on ESPN.
Report Card John Gilchrist- B The good: Seems to be in a zone. What happens the day he snaps out of it? 17 points, snaps his streak of 20+ point games, but do you think he really cared. If he did he had plenty of more chances to jack up some more three's. The bad: 3 assist 4 TO's, and I'm not talking about Time Outs!
Travis Garrison- B The good: 15 points, and seemed much more aggressive, after his quotes in all the papers about how he just goes through the motions some times. Canned a couple three's. The bad: 7 boards, Only 2 on the defensive end. Must still be going through the motions on the defensive glass! 2-9 from inside the arc. Starting to look more and more like our token SG in a big man's body.
Nik Caner-Medley- A The good: 17 points, 6 boards, 2 of 3 from 3. The bad: Came of the bench for some reason. Coaches decision usually indicates some wrong doing. Oh well, hopefully he can ride this performance into Chapel Hill.
Ekene Ibekew- C The good: Didn't foul out or get hurt The bad: 6 points, 3 TO's
Chris McCray- C The good: 4-7 shooting The bad: 0-3 from three, and at least two of those FG's were on fast break dunks. Chris if you ever Google yourself and read this, you are on my fantasy team, shoot more! DJ Strawberry- D The good: Started first game this year. 2-2 FT's The bad: 0 for 4 from anywhere you are allowed to be defended. Did not grab the starting job around the the proverbial neck.
Sterling Ledbetter- The good: I don't car about his stats. He showed he can help this team as a back up PG. The bad: 1 assist and 1 to in 13 minutes.
James Gist- D The good: Highlight put back. 8 boards helped this from being an "F as in Frank!" The bad: Highlight put back was lone hoop. 5 To's
Mike Grinnon- B The good- Played better than Mike Jones, and he is no McD's AA! The bad: 1 point in 10 minutes.
Mike Jones- F The good- Got some playing time. The bad- Jacked up an Air ball from the lane, and a few other ill advised shots.
Will Bowers- B The good- Much PT, 5 points 6 boards. Shows he should be able to spell, albeit briefly our big men. The bad- Read this somewhere today and thought it was accurate. "He needs to work on his shot release, it looks as if though he is trying to throw a discuss on a baby hook shot."
Gini Chukura- C The good- he got in the game and had a block. The bad- Good chance that may have been his last PT for a while.
