“And now Mufflers are raining down on the field, it is chaos here at Carter Finely” -Snively Bob W. Overall: I really can’t describe how I feel after this win. It’s a feeling that I didn’t think I’d ever have after a 6-6 season. I think it’s called “satisfaction”. What a way to go out. Think about it. If we all sat down in a room together to try to script how the Terps would end their season, none of this would have come up with this ending. Picture the writing room, we’re all in there with a dry erase board coming up with ideas, Chris: Let’s have us win it with a game winning field goal as time expires ala the Das Boot game. Brian: Well I’ll be in the stands for this one and just once this year I’d like to not have to sweat out a Maryland win. J: OK, that’s a good point. Let’s say we have us win by 10, maybe something like 24-14. Bob: That makes sense to me. I mean it isn’t like anyone would believe us if we really routed them. In College Park, yeah perhaps some viewers would buy it, but in Carter Finely with a Bowl game on the line, it just isn’t believable. Jason: Geez I don’t know. I’d just be happy with a win, making it by 10 is nice, but I think even that is on the edge of reality. What do Jen and Erin think? Jen and Erin: Sorry what was the question? We were playing each other in one on one flip cup. Forrest: Look I don’t care how it works out, we just have to win. Justin (Stands up and throws the Dry Erase Board to the ground): How about this. We go out there, play one of the most, IF NOT THE MOST complete games of the year, utterly demoralize NC State, taking their fans entirely out of the contest, and then as we walk off the field victoriously with Home: 0 Visitors: 37 showing on the scoreboard!!! Bob (into the microphone in his lapel): Uh we need security in room 204…pronto. I mean what happened yesterday was entirely 100% unbelievable. I was going through things in my mind thinking we had a 40-45% chance at winning. Then as the announcers got talking and it hit me that NC State started the year 1-5 and was now 5-6, I started thinking, well this isn’t the same NC State team, we could be in from some trouble. And then after the first two Maryland offensive possessions where we couldn’t even gain positive yardage on the ground, I was genuinely dreading watching the rest of the game. But hats off to the Terps. This year has been nothing but adversity. Blowing the Wake game, Blowing the UVA game, losing the 2nd string QB before the first snap of the season, losing the starting QB during one of the biggest games of the year. I mean there were so many strikes against us folding would not only be expected, but in a way sort of allowable. I mean if we lost yesterday and didn’t make a bowl, we’d chalk it up to bad luck and get ready for 2008, but the team didn’t do it. They kept fighting, and in the end I’m not sure how History will judge the 2007 team, but we should look back at this squad as one of the most resilient of the Ralph Friedgen era. Now 6-6 seasons aren’t anything to print tee shirts over, but Congratulations to the Terps. Now let’s go BOWL!! What’s it all Mean: Well it means we are Bowl eligible. The ACC has 8 tie in’s and going into yesterday; Maryland, NC State, and Miami were all fighting for that last guaranteed spot. Well we know how the Maryland game turned out, and Miami was turned away by BC, so that means the Terps clinch post season play. This also means that the Terps could be the “Bob W bowl pick Lock of the year”. Think about it, we are much better than a 6-6 team, we are finally going to be healthy for a change, and Ralph does a great job getting the kids ready for Bowl Games (3-1). However if we are going to Boise, and have to play the Bronco’s, all bets are off!! Game Highlights: This is easy. Not all games have a turning point, but this one’s wasn’t even debatable. Dave Philistins interception and return was it. That not only stopped a scoring drive for NC State, it set up our first field goal of the day and after that, NC State was never in it. Game Lowlights: It’s tough to find a low light when you have your first shut out in 4 years, and your first shut out over an ACC opponent in 11 years. But after our first two offensive possessions when we couldn’t move the ball, I was feeling a little low, so we’ll go with that. MVP: You could go a lot of directions for this one. But Lance Ball’s numbers really stand out. Actually Da’Rel Scott’s numbers really stand out (8 carries 89 yards), but Lance was the bruiser that wore down the Wolfpacks line. So I’m going with Lance Ball for MVP. For honorable mention, I’m picking Dave Philistin. He had the crucial pick and led the team with 10 tackles. So he get’s the honorable mention. I could also go with the entire defense since they really raised their game on Saturday, so we’ll give them honorable, honorable mention. Random Thought- In the announcers keys to the game, they said Chris Turner needs to stay focused. I hate that expression. Do you think during the FSU game he was day dreaming about winning the Nobel Peace Prize, or counting clouds? Of course not, when I play golf and have a bad round, it isn’t because I’m off in lala land. I’m just not executing for whatever reason, I don’t know the reason, but it’s affecting my game. But I’m definitely focused. Say Chris Turner needs to execute. Saying he needs to focus, or any athlete for that matter is kind of a cheap shot in my opinion, do you really think Turner doesn’t want to win? Weather Report Card: We have to move this section due to the fact that we haven’t had a tailgate recap for a while. I’m not too sure how I did the last two games, but judging by the tv, I have had the overall precipitation right, but I’m not sure what the temps were, so let’s see how I did. Luckily, I still have one more forecast to go, thanks to the Terps, so I’ll have to wait until the end of December to calculate my final grade.
Around the ACC: Game of the Week Virginia Tech 33 Virginia 21- Tech takes the Commonwealth Bowl in easy fashion. This win serves as a blow to those who say you can’t win with 2 quarterbacks. This also of course sets up the BC-VaTech rematch, which I called about a month ago, thank you very much. Boston College 28 Miami 14- BC get’s its first win over Miami in 14 tries, how is that for a factoid. Miami’s loss guarantees it will be home for the Holidays. HA! Georgia 31 Georgia Tech 17 – Georgia has now beaten Tech 7 in a row. Clemson 23 South Carolina 21- For once Clemson actually has something good happen to them as time expires, as they kick the game winning field goal to win the Battle of South Carolina. North Carolina 20 Duke 14 – Someone please remind me how we were unable to beat UNC? Actually don’t. Wake Forest 31 Vanderbuilt 17- Vandy was looking for their first bowl game in 25 years. Keep on looking Commodores. Florida 45 Florida State 12- He who wears jorts did nothing but solidify his bid for the Heisman in this rout of a once mighty FSU program.
