MD at UVA 06 Game Recap

By: Chris B.

Well if I remember correctly a few weeks back, I said if they lose this one, Fridge must go.  In all honesty, this was the only game remaining on the schedule that I had penciled in as a "W".  So as halftime came upon us, and we trailed 20-0, I sat there thinking to myself, he must go.  This one really was the tale of two halves.  The way were playing I would never have given us a fighting chance to come back.  So as I watched this debacle unfold on ESPN 360 (with the most annoying announcers, the one guy talks about Fridges weight every time they show his picture) I was beside myself, thinking that it was going to take all of the excitement out of next weeks game.  To be honest I am not even sure if it was anything Fridge did that allowed the comeback.  In fact we were forced to punt on our first drive of the second half after only getting one or two first downs.  But, none the less, this punt would change our fortunes.  A muff by UVA, and MD recovers inside the two I believe.  One play Lance Ball TD.  Ok we have some life, and you could literally see UVA start to question themselves for the first time all day.  They had did what ever they wanted to that point, but all of the sudden there was life in the Turtle.  We exchange punts, and then force UVA to punt again, and once again it is a special teams blunder that helped out the Terps.  A shank for a 16 yard punt, and MD takes over at the 30.  A nice drive, and this time with first and goal from the 5 we are able to punch it in, unlike last week.  In fact it was our "mobile" QB Hollenbach who took it in for a 3 yard score on a bootleg.  So we are back, and again UVA loses a bit more confidence.  This time Keon Lattimore gets a nice block, and takes it to the house for a 56 yard score.  All we need is for Ennis to punch through the XP and we take the lead.  XP is up and good.  Wow, the Terps have stormed back and taken the lead.  So UVA still has plenty of time, however, Erin Henderson took a page out of big brother EJ's playbook from last week, with a pick 6 return for 45 yards, to put the Terps up 7.  Ennis XP is good, and the lead is 8.  We hold them, all we need is a couple of first down and victory is ours.  Well, how does a three and out sound?  Yeah, pretty crappy to me too!  We punt.  On the first play Sewell throws a dart down the middle for 6.  They are going for two, and if Sewell leads the receiver, the conversion is good.  However, the pass is a little behind and Josh Wilson is able to break it up.  Up 2.  Does UVA kick away or try the onsides.  Well they kick off, and all we need is a few first downs.  Sound familiar?  This time Lance in your Pants Ball is able to get the needed runs, and the Terps hold on for the victory, that I thought was a sure loss.  Is this the kind of win, that can catapult a season, or were we really lucky we played UVA?????

D7 Tailgate MVP

No brainer here, not only did Erin Henderson score the game winning TD with his interception, but it seemed he was in on a lot of tackles, in fact let me look up his totals: that would be 10, and several were key tackles on third downs to force punts.

Around the ACC

BC 22 VT 3:  The story of this one has to be BC's kicker.  The guy had never played an organized football game.  So what does he do?  Goes out and drills two of two FG's and two of two XP's.  (more than you can say about Ennis this week).  Glennon could just never get going and BC was able to win this one before the home crowd.

Clemson 63 Temple 69.  Temple sells this one giving Clemson a game in Charlotte.  Only stat you need to know here, James Davis 9 carries 138 yds 3 TD's.

S. Fla 37 UNC 20.  Oh lets see in the old ACC we would get to play UNC and Dook, instead substitute Miami, and BC.  Good Trade?  Anyways the highlights I saw it looked like Turnovers killed UNC.

FSU 51 Duke 24.  Wow 24 points, that is a nice total for perennial punching bag Dook.  Weatherford had a nice game before being lifted for Xavier Lee who had 3 picks.

Wake 25 NCST 23:  The battle for "The Best Team in NC" was a very entertaining game, yes I said it, a very entertaining game to watch.  Wake continues to impress improving to 6-1 and becoming bowl eligible.  Daniel Evans tried again to rally the troops on a last minute comeback attempt, but this time Wake makes the interception and is able to hold on.  Do you think special teams are not  important? Wake's Kicker drills two 50+ yard FG's which were the difference.  He is also hit high on the upright from 49.

Miami 35 FIU 0.  Oh there was a football game played here?  Any highlights I have seen have been of the brawl.  13 ejections, players being hit with crutches, stomping on players, and police on the field.  Ugly scene.

Random Thought:  Did you see Navy's QB separate his knee?  Disgusting.  Adrian Petersons father was released from Prison, and was in the stands for the first time since AP was 12, only to see his son break his collar bone and most likely end his college career.  Even though PSU lost to Michigan 17-10, Beaver stadium looked impressive with their "white out".  Is there a better atmosphere than an SEC game?  Those people know how to make a home field advantage (See Auburn).  Another unbeaten falls, as Florida loses to Auburn after a blocked punt and a fumble were returned for TD's.
