Virginia Tech Game Recap By Bob W.
Overall:
It has been a long year hasn’t it? And just when you think you have suffered enough, something like this happens. This game was over before it begun, and stop me if you heard this before but Statham’s interceptions absolutely killed us. He completed his first pass, but only because it deflected off of the Hokie defender and into Suters (I think) hands. Then the next pass, well you know the rest. These truly are the times to try men’s souls. But I am not afraid because I have NO doubt that the Fridge will right the ship. That being said, lets take a closer look at this debacle.
Game Highlights:
I have no idea where to begin on this one. I think I will go with Hollenbach’s play. I would have loved to see Steffy get more time, but his head first tackle after his interception ended those hopes. We did have the perfect vantage point for the Steffy interception and I really appreciated the way he tried to rectify his mistake, but he ended up doing more harm than good on his tackle. Sam Hollenbach once he got into the game went 5-8 for 53 yards and most importantly didn’t turn the ball over. Granted, he wasn’t facing the 1st team defense at that point, but help me out here, I have to find a highlight somewhere.
Game Lowlights:
Joel Statham ended this game before it began. Don’t get me wrong, I really like Joel and would love for him to be the Savior of Maryland Football but his inability to play with any type of consistency is killing us. This was a huge game going in and we needed every possible break in order to have a chance. We knew it would be close even if we won the turnover battle, so you can’t go out and throw an I. N. T. on your second pass of the night. That play ended any chance we had and gave all the momentum in the world to Va. Tech.
Game MVP:
The MVP most definitely is not going to be an offensive player. Looking back over the stats, what was lost in the embarrassment was the performance of William Kershaw the Junior Linebacker from North Carolina. Kershaw had 14 tackles on the day, which is shocking because I didn’t even know our team had 14 tackles on the day. In any case we appreciate your effort number 48 and we look forward to you helping us right the ship next year.
Extra Points: Since this was a rare weekend when I could actually watch football here are some extra points:
· What are the odds that Maryland will be the favorite when we meet Navy in Baltimore next year? · It would sure be nice to have a rivalry on the level of Alabama and Auburn, but at the same time, it is kind of nice not to. · Utah finished undefeated for the season. I am man enough to admit I laughed at Texas A&M when Utah beat them back on September 2. I formally apologize. · Even when your team loses 55-6 there is still nothing better in the world than being at a big time college football game. Go Terps! |
