Wake Football Recap

Wake Forest Game Recap

Overall:

It is always nice to go out on a win.  Ending the season with a Bowl win would have been a bit nicer, but after this season, I will take what the Terps give me.  Though the game involved two teams who had already lost their shot at the post season, it was still a good win for the program.  5-6 looks a heck of a lot better than 4-7.  We got to see our first Stathamless game of the year and as a result our QB situation is more muddled than ever.  Despite all that though, it is nice to be able to sit down and write about a win.

Game Highlights:

Though it is probably overly optimistic to say all three of these guys could be back, there is an outside chance.  Merriman COULD pass up the draft if he does not like where he is projected to go, Chris Kelly COULD get another year of eligibility (basically the same situation as Jason White and they gave it to him).  And I have not heard any rumors regarding Super Star D’Qwell Jackson leaving early.  Together the three of them combined for 35 tackles and 4.5 sacks on Saturday.  IF all three could come back (please, please, please), we would be looking at a monster defense next year.

Game Lowlights:

The lowest point for me yesterday was watching our seniors play in their last game.  Sure they were Vandy’s boys, and they aren’t all superstars, but for 4 years they gave us more entertaining football than all the classes between 1985-2000 combined.  Steve Suter, Nick “Das Boot” Novak, Dominique Foxworth, Kevin Eli, Lou Lombardo, Chris Kelly (hopefully not), Sammy “The Bull” Maldonado, Rich Parsons, and Henry Scott, you all will be missed, thanks for 37 wins and 2 Bowl Victories (both decisive).  Another Lowlight from Saturday’s game was seeing Nick Novak's last kick as a Terp blocked.  I will personally never forget the famous “Das Boot” Thursday Night game against Georgia Tech.  The one that started it all.

Game MVP:

I am not going to do the easy thing and just give the MVP to Sam Hollenbach.  Yes he played error free and moved the team up and down the field.  But I am not convinced that Steffy or Statham could not have done the same if not better, against the ACC’s worst pass defense.  So as a bid to keep him around one more year, I am giving the MVP award to Shawn “Lights Out” Merriman.  A week or two ago I was listing to the radio and they had on a coach who was reflecting on his days as a recruiter, he said in order for his school to consider a player in high school they had what is called “the wife rule”.  If you take your wife to the game you are scouting, and she doesn’t know which player you are looking at, then he isn’t worth scouting.  Keeping with that theme, even my own mother could tell that Merriman is a man against boys out there, and he certainly was again against Wake.  Shawn Merriman you are the D-7 MVP, and hopefully not for the last time.

Extra Points:

I got up at 5:30 am, drank until noon, drove up to Delaware to play cards until Mid Night, so basically I have no idea what happened outside of Byrd Stadium this weekend.
