Wake Tailgate Recap
By Bob W.
Wake Forest Tailgate Recap Overall: Well, we knew we couldn’t avoid it. We
tried all season long and for a while, we were able to keep it at bay, but just
when you think it is safe to go back in the parking lot, the dreaded Noon
kick-off shows up. The 6:00 am tailgate start has never been an issue to D-7,
(heck, did we even have lights when we were in school?) but still it is nice to
sleep past 8:00 am THEN start tailgating. Regardless, the regulars were there
bright and early and even the late arrivals were still pretty early in
comparison to the rest of the University. Tailgate Highlights: Though it was not football related, I
think the tailgate highlight was any conversation I had regarding the Maryland
Basketball team. I have never had so many conversations about Terps B-ball that
were all so positive, and all so short. For example: D-7 A: How about that game last night? D-7 B: Yeah, they looked awesome, hope they play like that all year. D-7 A: No kidding, so are the brat’s
done? Despite our recent B-ball success, even
when we win, we can all name about 50 things that could have gone better. Not
on Saturday. Good work Coach Williams and the Men’s Basketball team, keep it up
all year, and most importantly BEAT DUKE! A runner up for the Tailgate highlight
was the guy all alone in the lot next to the soccer field. He was blaring a cd
of the Maryland band and when the running onto the field song came on he would
yell “BOOM!” at the top of his lungs to fill in for the cannon. It is one thing
to show up at 6:00 am to drink with friends, but to show up by yourself and
scream “BOOM!” at the top of your lungs at 6 in the morning, well that’s
dedication. Tailgate Lowlights: The tailgate lowlight was the Punt,
Pass, and Kick competition. Yes the competition was great, and it is always
nice to get the old blood flowing, but the fact that we could hold a PP&K in the
parking lot was a little disturbing. It has been years since we have had the
room to pull that off. Maybe because were we out of the post season, maybe it
was because it was Thanksgiving weekend, or maybe it was because of the noon
start, but whatever the reason, some of our fellow Maryland supporters need to
step it up. Our lots should be full 6 hours before kick-off REGARDLESS of the
situation. FYI Chris won the two PP&K’s, I would be in big trouble for not
pointing it out since I promised the winner a little publicity. Tailgate MVP: First let me say this so everyone knows
the rules in the future. If we are playing flip cup and we don’t have even
numbers, and you are asked to participate, if you decline you have forfeited
your TGMVP eligibility for the week. With that being said, in a move that will probably cause me more grief than relief, I am not naming a single Wake Forest Tailgate MVP. There were a couple bright spots, like Gilmore sacrificing his health for the sake of flip cup fairness, but overall no one really shined, and I say that not as an insult but as a compliment, everyone did a great job. I give this final TGMVP award to all of those throughout the season who contributed to making our tailgates the highlight of every game week. With out everyone, we would just have a 5-6 football team. Instead we now have a great season of memories and a big ole list of things to do to make next years tailgating season even better than this one. |
