WVU Game Recap

By: Bob Wevodau

Overall:

There are really a million ways to look at this.  One we played on the road with a first year QB, turned the ball over 5 times and still took the number 7 team in the nation to OT.  The other way to look at this was that we turned the ball over 5 times and had we not, well we would have walked out of WV with the same cockiness we had last time we visited.  The good news is we are still ranked.  I think anyone who saw the game and believes WV is the #7 team in the nation, knows we are a tough, tough football team.

Game Highlights:

My game highlight, well I would have to say there were two.  First one was Derrick Fenner catching the TD over Pac Man Jones (which must be his birth name since that is what the PA guy calls him).  It is a shame Joel Statham gets credit for a TD on that play because it was all about Fenner wanting the ball more than Jones.  The second play had to be the blocked game winning field goal.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time to celebrate since OT followed shortly after.

Game Lowlights:

This has to be the easiest question of the day.  The 5 turnovers were the low lights.  You could argue that if we held on to the ball in 3 of those cases we would have scored at least a FG, which as it turned out would have been enough to avoid OT.  We can not keep turning the ball over like this.

Game MVP:

No one really stood out for the Terps this game, and I don’t necessarily mean that in a bad way.  The defense looked really good, but by the end you just knew they had been on the field way too long (goes back to 5 turnovers).  I was impressed by the first half play of Nose Tackle Henry Scott who seemed to be in on a lot of plays.  West Virginia claimed how great their offensive line was this year and Maryland didn’t seem to be overmatched.  I also will name Shawn “Lights Out” Merriman co-MVP, the kid is a great player, nuff said.
